I began my teaching career in Ruislip Tuition Centre, I was one of the main teachers. There I taught pupils in groups of 5-6 of similar standard.

When I moved to Watford in 1993, I started my own private tuition business involving home visits in the local area. I have now been teaching for over 30 years in this way, primarily Maths but also Statistics and Physics .

I teach pupils from age 9 to adult. I have also been able to help some pupils with various learning difficulties and behavioural issues. I am a family man with children of my own and get on well with children, youths and adults of any age.
Students can often be neglected in schools as efforts are focused on the top classes. Other times the size of the class is simply too big to give the needed attention to any one pupil. This can be further exacerbated by disruptive pupils or a teacher that is having trouble controlling the class. With one to one tuition, you can teach at the exact pace of the student, rather then the pace of the class average. For example, depending on the student, a whole chapter of an A level book can be taught and understood in a single 1 hour lesson, whereas in school it could take 1-2 weeks.
Maths needs a firm foundation of basic knowledge and skills before you can successfully grasp deeper topics. I first establish the student's ability in fundamental principles and methods, filling in any gaps in their knowledge before progressing on to the required syllabus.

I help students organise their thoughts and working out in a way that maximises marks and minimises calculation errors. I also train them on exam techniques and how to revise effectively.

Lessons are given in a dignified but relaxed manner. I try to make maths as fun as possible. This is particularly needed for young children and older pupils who have a dislike of maths. I relate many of the required topics to every day life and discuss why the topic is useful outside of just passing exams. This all provides the added motivation for learning.

As students progress their confidence will grow and their enjoyment will naturally increase. I have had a number of pupils that have 'hated' maths but after a period of time, they have gained ability and began to enjoy the subject to the point of even choosing it as one of their A level selections!
